Reimagining Lincolnshire: Unearthing Hidden Histories Through Digital Storytelling

We’re proud to announce the launch of Reimagining Lincolnshire, a new project led by Threshold Studios in partnership with the University of Lincoln, and made possible thanks to support from the National Lottery Heritage Fund.

With £248,000 in funding from The National Lottery Heritage Fund, Reimagining Lincolnshire will connect community audiences and visitors with the social histories of Lincoln. By highlighting themes such as diversity, migration, LGBTQIA+ visibility, well-being, gender, and trades, the project makes heritage relevant to contemporary life.

Why Reimagining Lincolnshire?

This project is about finding the gaps, amplifying the silences, and celebrating the resilience, creativity and contributions of those who have often been overlooked.

From migration and gender identity to social justice and abolition, Reimagining Lincolnshire aims to tell these stories not just as historical footnotes, but as part of the living cultural fabric of the region.

“We’re so grateful to the Heritage Lottery Fund for supporting this project. This is a powerful opportunity to make Lincoln’s hidden histories visible and accessible to all — and to celebrate the people who shaped the city we know today with the people who live here now.”Samantha Lindley, Chief Executive, Threshold Studios

What Will the Project Deliver?

This is a multi-strand project designed to live in both the digital and physical public space of Lincoln:

A Permanent Digital Archive
We’ll build on the University of Lincoln’s existing Reimagining Lincolnshire archive, led by Prof. Heather Hughes, to create an accessible online resource for all. This will include personal testimonies, community-led research, and curated historical material.

Community Roadshows and Digital Workshops
A programme of events, skills sessions and local activations will empower communities to contribute their stories and explore digital tools for storytelling.

Citywide Digital Trails
Interactive digital heritage trails will bring the project to life across Lincoln’s streets, embedding these stories in the places they happened. These will be live and accessible for at least five years, and focus on key locations including the Lower High Street, Cornhill, High Street, Bailgate and Uphill.

“We’re delighted to partner with Threshold Studios to create a permanent digital home for stories that have lived in libraries, people’s attics, and memories. This is history for everyone—shared, accessible, and enduring.” – Prof. Heather Hughes, University of Lincoln

Why Now?

Our shared heritage is richer when it reflects all of us. At Threshold, we believe storytelling is a form of cultural justice and by working collaboratively with communities, we can reshape how Lincolnshire sees itself and how it’s seen by the world.

Reimagining Lincolnshire is also about looking forward: using digital tools not just to preserve, but to activate history, making it engaging, meaningful, and visible to new audiences.
