The Flight of Millicent Stanley

Discover the incredible story of Millicent Stanley—a clockmaker’s apprentice who dreams of flying—in a free immersive installation created by Electric Egg in Lincoln on 3rd-4th May, 11am-4:30pm. Free, no booking required!

The Flight of Millicent Stanley is a magical indoor installation that uses projection, sound, and lighting to tell the inspiring story of one young woman’s dream to fly.

We spoke to Neil Baker from Electric Egg, about how the story of Millicent Stanley took shape—and why Lincoln’s past inspires their work.

“We were inspired by the early days of flight—people like Charles Green, who would tour the country and draw huge crowds with his balloon launches. It had this ‘carnival comes to town’ feel, and we wanted to tap into that sense of wonder and possibility.” Neil Baker, Electric Egg

Electric Egg has long been known for their work in film, photography, and immersive installations. Based in Lincoln, they are passionate about blending local heritage with bold digital storytelling.

“Flight is such a big part of Lincolnshire’s heritage—but this story takes that legacy and looks further back, before the RAF, before WWII. It’s about the early spark of invention, that pioneering spirit.” Neil Baker, Electric Egg

Over the course of 12 minutes, the installation invites visitors to enter a fully realised world. Set pieces—including clocks, a drawing board, and the workshop of Millicent, animated through projection mapping, light, and sound, creating a space where history and fantasy blur.

“We looked at how we could move people around the space using sound, light, and multiple projections. We wanted the room to come alive—not just one flat screen, but clocks ticking, blueprints animating, and props reacting to the story.” Neil Baker, Electric Egg

With its rich animation style and handcrafted storytelling, The Flight of Millicent Stanley celebrates curiosity, invention, and the importance of dreaming big—values that feel as timely today as they were in Millicent’s imagined 19th-century world.

“This is really a story about following your curiosity. Millicent fails, and fails again, but she keeps going. That kind of perseverance and imagination—it’s something we really hope resonates, especially with younger audiences.” Neil Baker, Electric Egg

More than just an artwork, The Flight of Millicent Stanley is a call to look differently at the past—and the present.

“We hope people walk away inspired to see the city, and maybe even themselves, in a new light.”?— Electric Egg
