Mr Holly’s Newton-O-Matic: Science, Spectacle and Surprise Hits the Streets of Lincoln
What happens when you mix Newtonian physics with a flair for the theatrical? You get The Newton-O-Matic – a one-of-a-kind, interactive street experience popping up in Lincoln this August.
Threshold Studios is proud to unveil its latest commission as part of the Lincoln Connected programme: The Newton-O-Matic – an ingenious mobile installation celebrating one of Lincolnshire’s most famous sons, Sir Isaac Newton. Expect curious contraptions, live performance, hands-on experiments, and unexpected bursts of fun across two exciting days in the city centre.
The Newton-O-Matic will be popping up in Castle Square and Cornhill Market in Lincoln on Wednesday 20 and Thursday 21 August 2025, with interactive performances and playful science moments taking place throughout the day. The event is completely free to attend, so whether you’re passing by or planning a day out, keep an eye out for this pop-up celebration of Newtonian physics and Lincolnshire heritage in action.
Part Street Theatre, Part Science Experiment
Created by physical theatre artist and kinetic contraption specialist Matt Pang, and produced by the ever-imaginative Mr Holly, The Newton-O-Matic brings the laws of physics to life with energy, humour, and surprising moments of interaction. It’s designed to travel through the city centre and engage small groups at a time – so keep your eyes peeled and your curiosity ready.
Whether you’re local or visiting Lincoln for the day, this is your chance to explore Newton’s legacy like never before – through pop-up play, performance, and a little scientific mischief.
Celebrating Lincolnshire’s Scientific Heritage
Sir Isaac Newton was born right here in Lincolnshire – at Woolsthorpe Manor – and studied at King’s School in Grantham. As we approach the 300th anniversary of his death in 2027, Threshold Studios is kicking off a wider programme of celebrations and reflections on the impact of this remarkable local figure.
“Alongside the interactive fun, we want people to leave having learned something new about Newton and Lincolnshire’s incredible scientific heritage,” says Creative Producer Mr Holly. “But more than anything, we want them to be entertained and proud of a city that celebrates both its past and its playful spirit.”
World-leading physicist Professor Valerie Gibson of the University of Cambridge agrees:
“This is an exciting and creative new format to engage the public in the story and achievements of a local man who became a giant of science. I recommend going to see it!”
More Than Just a Performance
This is the ninth commission in Threshold Studios’ Lincoln Connected programme – a series of digital and cultural experiences that bring creativity into the heart of the city.
“Over the past 18 months, we’ve brought a series of bold digital and cultural experiences to Lincoln, including February’s Lincoln Lights festival,” explains Threshold’s Chief Executive Samantha Lindley.
“The Newton-O-Matic is a playful and thought-provoking way to connect with Lincolnshire’s heritage and its role in shaping world-changing ideas. It explores how place influences discovery – without shying away from the complexity of Newton’s legacy.”
Cllr Joshua Wells from the City of Lincoln Council adds:
“Celebrating one of our county’s most influential historical figures in such a creative, interactive way is a brilliant example of how we can bring heritage to life on our streets.”
Be Part of the Discovery
Don’t miss your chance to stumble upon science in the city. Whether you’re 8 or 80, this playful pop-up will surprise, educate, and entertain – all in the name of one of Lincolnshire’s greatest minds.
